Franci’s FITC San Francisco Diary: Day Two

By day two at FITC it had become obvious to me that I had underestimated Flash as a tool for deploying all sorts of interactive digital experiences on the desktop as well as in public. It seems you have to see and hear first hand the different logic and technologies that go into creating these experiences to actually realize that you might be able to pull it off yourself.. I’m talking about most of us who have experience with Flash and AS3 and a bit of extra creativity in store. FITC has given me a fresh set of ideas and opened up a new playground I can experiment in.

“Demand for Flash engineers has suddenly Surged” – WSJ

The Wall Street Journal posted an interesting article about how full-time Flashers “can now command more than $150,000 a year in salary,” according to GreeneSearch recruiting firm. “In Silicon Valley, hot job categories come and go as different technologies shift in and out of favor. The latest example: Flash engineers.” Writer Pui-Wing Tam says that start-ups, such as online gaming companies – are looking for Flash developers who are creative and can code. (That’s you, right?) The Flash developer cited in the piece said, “I make 150% more than three years ago.” Awesome.

H.264 GPU Decoding in Flash Player on Mac OS X is live!

We just pushed a few minutes ago a new version of the Flash Player 10.1.82.76 containing a nice feature that was in beta until now called “Gala”. Yes, H.264 GPU decoding in Mac OSX is now officially enabled in the Flash Player. You should notice now a nice difference when playing H.264 content on your Mac in terms of CPU usage. We rarely enable new features in security releases but we really wanted to enable such a cool feature.

From Print to Web in a flash

Adobe and HOW magazine challenged some of our favorite designers to transform their existing print work into immersive, interactive projects for the web using Flash Catalyst CS5, and the results are stunning. Flash Player 10.1 on Google Nexus Ones

We are pleased to announce that Flash Player 10.1 is now generally available for download on the Android Market for Google™ Nexus One™ phones. Flash Player 10.1 for Android (2.2) is now generally available as of August 16; we had previously released Flash Player 10.1 to partners in June 2010. We expect additional Android devices like the HTC Incredible, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Milestone, Droid X, Droid by Motorola, Dell Streak and other mobile platforms to get Flash Player 10.1 over the next few weeks and months. Upgrade paths for devices in market today depend on the specific device, manufacturer, operator and the region.

Flash Player 10.1 Demo on HTC Desire
