But now, non-members will be able to purchase selected Premium tutorials on a one-off basis, without a Premium membership . Hey! Look for this link! So far we’ve added nearly half our Premium tutorials to the Tuts+ Marketplace, and will be adding more over time.

Aug 27, 2010 AIR, Flash, General
Things are going to be pretty unresponsive around here (more than usual) for the next week as I’m taking some time off to recharge the batteries. After I return things will be picking up rapidly as we enter the new conference season. Here are some upcoming things that are going on over the next few months. There is lots of exciting new stuff that I can’t wait to start talking about.

Demand for Flash Developers is Increasing
Aug 26, 2010 AIR, Flash, General
The Wall Street Journal recently put out an article describing how the demand for Flash developers has been increasing as of late. While this is no surprise to most of us in the community, it is a refreshing reminder that those who have marked Flash as a dying technology are quite wrong indeed. The article states that the increase in online Flash gaming is a large reason for the spike. I’m guessing that it also has something to do with all of the anticipation surrounding Flash on mobile devices.

“Demand for Flash engineers has suddenly Surged” – WSJ
Aug 26, 2010 AIR, Flash, Flash Catalyst, Flex, General, Resources
The Wall Street Journal posted an interesting article about how full-time Flashers “can now command more than $150,000 a year in salary,” according to GreeneSearch recruiting firm. “In Silicon Valley, hot job categories come and go as different technologies shift in and out of favor. The latest example: Flash engineers.” Writer Pui-Wing Tam says that start-ups, such as online gaming companies – are looking for Flash developers who are creative and can code. (That’s you, right?) The Flash developer cited in the piece said, “I make 150% more than three years ago.” Awesome.

Create an Epic War Game in Flash: Part 1 – Active Premium
Aug 26, 2010 AIR, Actionscript 3.0, Flash, Flex, General, Tutorials
In this two-part Active Premium tutorial we’ll be building a top-down war game from scratch. Creating a game is definitely one of the most involved tasks in the world of programming and my mission here is to help Premium members make this process a little bit easier. We run a Premium membership system for $9 a month (or $22 for 3 months!) which gives members access to extra tutorials, like this one! You’ll also get access to all other Premium content (Psd Premium, Net Premium etc.) and whilst logged in, your favorite Tuts+ sites are all completely ad-free ! This Premium Tutorial is Filled with Creative Tips Our war game will implement many different concepts from building a background based on xml data to breaking colors into separate channels using bitwise operators. The game itself will not be like some MMORPG (it would probably take several volumes of a book to describe the process of complicated game creation).

There’s been a sense of confusion in our industry lately. Standards are changing and there is a lot of discussion about where Flash fits in the future of the web. As a kind of therapy I decided to check out the FITC San Francisco and so far, I’ve found exactly what I was looking for.. In this diary I’ll try and get you up to date on what’s going on in some of the more interesting projects involving the Flash platform and even some insight into other technologies that might change the way we do our business.

Idea for a Cool AIR Application
Aug 23, 2010 AIR, Flash, Flex, General
I often get ideas for things to build but don’t have the time to actually see them through. Recently I came across an API for accessing the Android Marketplace that was written in Java. Google has no official API for this as you are supposed to only be able to access it from your device. The idea was to build an AIR application that would allow you to search and browse on the market.
